Review: Plantronics BackBeat 903+
Plantronics are one of the leaders when it comes to producing Bluetooth products and the BackBeat 903+ lives up to that legacy.
The BackBeat 903+ is made of durable materials which can take the rigours of everyday use and the demands of a run or session at the gym.
Both earpieces are held together by a rubber strap that runs around the back of the wearer’s head.
They also offer the added advantage of offering a wireless connection between the stereo earphones and your mobile device so those cables won’t be getting in the way.
They were comfortable to wear thanks to the numerous points of adjustment which include telescoping and swivelling parts.
Compatible with any Bluetooth enabled mobile, the BackBeat 903+ is easy to pair and link with your device.
For mobile usage the device has controls to accept, reject, transfer and make calls.
On the music side those same controls can be used to not only control the volume but to also navigate backwards and forwards through your music as well.
Audio streaming is possible thanks to the built-in A2DP (advanced audio distribution profile) which is also standard on the latest mobiles including the iPhone 4.
Speaking of the iPhone, the device’s battery level can also be seen when it is paired to the device so you know exactly when you need to reach for the charger.
In terms of audio quality, we were impressed with both the music and calls although it did lack the bass levels of dedicated music earphones.
And not having a noise-cancelling seal with the ear tips meant the outside sounds still crept in.
Another helpful feature were the voice alerts which announce the button and command you’ve executed like “track forward” , for example.
There is noise-cancelling technology for calls called Audio IQ2.
The calls we made with the device were clear at either end even when we were jogging beside a busy road.
The BackBeat 903+ is a great training partner and it can handle the sweat thanks to its solid plastic construction.
But there was one concern with the USB port which is used for recharging the device.
On the BackBeat 903+ this port is located at the bottom of the left earpiece which, thanks to the laws of gravity, is often where the sweat will gather and possibly affect the metal port.
Not a dealbreaker but something customers aiming to use this as their training headphones should be aware of.
We got about eight and a half hours out of the battery when we were using it mainly as our audio headphones.
Included with the BackBeat 903+ is a handy pouch which can be used to store the device when not in use and to carry the charger.
The Plantronics BackBeat 903+ combine the best of both worlds when connected to your mobile device with easy access to your music and keeping track of all your calls.
And the fact that there are no wires makes the device handy for all kinds of situations and uses.
