Facebook has finally released its official app for iPad which provides the site’s complete experience on the touchscreen device.

While the Facebook app has been one of the more popular iPhone apps, the iPad Facebook app debuts more than 18 months after the Apple tablet first went on sale.

Users who have already installed the Facebook iPhone app on their iPad will see an update in the App Store which will expand it to the larger version.

Now your newsfeed, photos and friends’ update are at your fingertips in a more comfortable and manageable size.

Before today iPad users installed the iPhone app on their device and expanded it to use it full screen.

The Facebook for iPad app has all your menus and favourite features at your fingertips

Now the updated app takes advantage of the entire screen and can be used either in portrait or landscape mode and will adjust on the fly.

The newsfeed dominates the centre of the screen and users can swipe left or right to reveal their messages, friends list and favourite pages of their chat window for real-time conversations with your friends and family.

Your notifications can be found in a drop down window on the Facebook iPad app

The left hand menu also contains all your apps, games, groups and lists.

The top of the app is like the website and features shortcuts to your friend requests, your messages and notifications. One tap on any of these icons opens a drop down window for easy access.

Your pictures are easier to navigate on the Facebook iPad app

It’s also easier to view your photo albums and your pictures can also be viewed full screen and flip through them like you’re looking through a real album.

The Facebook for iPad app also introduces a few new features and takes advantage of the device’s technology. For example, videos can be viewed within the Facebook app on the iPad’s screen or streamed using AirPlay to a high definition TV.

There are already dedicated Facebook apps for other tablets including Android devicea and BlackBerry’s PlayBook and the delay with the iPad’s version, the most popular tablet on the market, has been the subject of many a discussion from the social networking site’s 800m members.

The Facebook for iPad is free to download or a free update if you’ve already installed the iPhone app.
