We’ve got the 4K TVs, we’ve got the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players – and now here come the 4K discs. The first titles, including The Revenant and Mad Max Fury Road, will be appearing from this week.
Samsung’s 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player is already on sale with Panasonic, LG and Sony players expected later in the year.
And 4K Ultra HD TVs are the new standard for customers with four times the resolution of a full high definition TV.
Not it’s time to showcase those TVs with content that will use every single pixel on the screen.
The 4K Ultra HD discs will be sold in a distinct black slip case from May 12 with the release of The 5th Wave and Amazing Spiderman 2: Rise of Electro from Sony.
On May 18, we will see The Revenant 4K disc from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment which will be released on the same day as the Blu-ray and DVD versions of the Oscar-winning film.
May 18 will also be the day we see Roadshow Entertainment release 4K disc versions of Mad Max Fury Road, San Andreas and The Lego Movie.
The following week, on May 25, Fox will release Deadpool.
And not only will these films have four times the resolution of Blu-ray Disc but they will also have HDR (high dynamic range) for even brighter colours and deeper blacks on the latest HDR-compatible TVs.
Apart new and recent releases, there will also be a healthy back catalogue of hit films that will be offered on 4K Ultra HD disc.
From Fox we will see Life of Pi, The Martian, The Maze Runner, The Maze Runner Scorch Trials, The Kingsman and X-Men Days of Future Past.
From Roadshow Entertainment we can expect to see in the near future Creed, The Expendables 3 and Man of Steel.
These will be followed later in the year by day and date Roadshow releases of Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad.
