NBN outlines ambitious plan to complete network rollout by 2020

The NBN – National Broadband Network – on the back of a better than expected year has set an ambitious plan to compete the nationwide rollout with the next four years.

NBN has released its Corporate Plan 2017 which outlines the completion of the network and integrated business plan.

The plan states the NBN is on track to complete the network build – that’s eight million homes – by 2020 and stay in sight of the peak funding of $49b.

Revenues are also predicted to hit $5b by 2020 and ARPU (average revenue per user) forecast at $52.

Data consumption is estimated to grow by 30 per cent each year so demand for a faster broadband connection will be strong.

NBN is taking a multi-tech approach and offering different solutions including fibre to the premises (FTTP – up to 2.5 million homes), fibre to the node (FTTN – up to 6.5 million homes), HFC (hybrid fibre coaxial – up to 3.2 million homes) and fixed wireless and satellite (up to 1.1 million homes).

And 40 per cent of Australians will be able to enjoy download speeds of 1Gbps with 70 per cent able to reach at least 100Mbps.

“We have bold targets to deliver one of the most complex construction projects in our country’s history to ensure no Australian is left behind.  We are on track to make fast broadband available to everyone in 2020,” said NBN CEO Bill Morrow.

“To do this we need to work closely with our Retail Service Providers, and apply an intense focus on the end-user experience as we shift from being a company building the network to delivering exceptional service.

“We are fully flexible in our approach to the NBN network, so we can ensure we deliver broadband access to everyone as soon as possible and at least possible cost.

“The road ahead is steep. We are realistic about the challenges and we are well aware of the risks. We have never been better prepared to manage the successful delivery of the NBN network.”
