Telstra offers free calls and texts to Japan

In the midst of the Japan earthquake and tsunami disaster, Telstra today announced it would be offering free calls and text messages for customers trying to reach friends and family in the devastated area.

Telstra customers trying to reach loved ones using their home fixed-line phone or their mobile with a call or text will do so free of charge until March 25.

Calls and texts to Japan will be billed by Telstra at zero during this period.



Many Australians have been desperately trying make contact with friends and family members in the shattered region of Japan with varying degrees of success due to the damage to local mobile towers.

But people who have been displaced and lost their homes in the disaster have made their way to areas where mobile phone communication is still possible.

Telstra has already announced it will be making a $100,000 donation to the Japanese Red Cross .

US carriers Verizon, AT&T and Sprint have also offered free calls to Japan as people try to reconnect with their loved ones.
