Smartphone worldwide sales hit new record in Q3 2013

galaxynote3demo4Smartphone shipments hit a record 250 million units worldwide in the third quarter of 2013 with Samsung now accounting for a third of all devices sold.

The Q3 figures, provided by Juniper Research, represent an impressive 49 per cent year-on-year growth on the sale period in 2012 and a 10 per cent growth from the previous quarter this year.

Samsung shipped a record 85 million smartphones and reported a 26 per cent growth in profit thanks to increased sales in the premium and entry-level categories.

Apple sold 33.8 million iPhones in the same quarter – a 26 per cent year-on-year increase – and now accounts for one in seven smartphones sold.

Nokia posted its best ever Lumia smartphone sales with 8.8 million devices sold along with almost 6 million Asha units to bring it back in to the top three manufacturers behind Samsung and Apple.

Juniper’s latest research forecasts Samsung and Apple will continue to dominate the global smartphone market and will 17 per cent more smartphones by 2018 than were shipped globally in 2012.

BlackBerry sales had slipped to 3.7 million units in the most recent quarter while Huawei, LTE and LG managed a combined total of 37 million smartphone sales.
