Restaurant offers discount if you don’t use your mobile


restaurantphone2Do people using mobiles bother you in restaurants? An LA restaurant has gone so far as offering a five per cent discount to patrons who check their smartphones in at the door.

Eva Restaurant on Beverly Boulevard in West Hollywood wants to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere which is why owner/chef Mark Gold is encouraging customers to leave their smartphones at the front door.

Smartphones raise a number etiquette issues in restaurants with calls made and received during a meal and how that impacts on your fellow diners and other guests.

But in today’s world of social networking those issues can now include patrons using Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to share their experiences with all of their friends instead of actually enjoying the experience for themselves at the time.

And because every smartphone also includes a built-in camera, it’s not unusual for diners to take photographs of their dishes to share online.

Which is why Eva Restaurant has offered this incentive to disconnect from their devices and sit back, enjoy their meals and actually talk to their family and friends at the table.

“For us, it’s really not about people disrupting other guests. Eva is home, and we want to create that environment of home, and we want people to connect again,” Mark Gold told radio station KPCC.

“It’s about two people sitting together and just connecting, without the distraction of a phone, and we’re trying to create an ambience where you come in and really enjoy the experience and the food and the company.”

“I’m guilty of it as well. When my wife and I go to dinner it seems like the cellphone is part of the table setting now.

“Every table you look at – it’s wineglass, the silverware and a cellphone.”

Once diners are seated at Eva, the servers inform the guests of the offer of a five per cent discount which many are starting to take advantage of so they can enjoy each other’s company uninterrupted by technology.
