Optus offer unlimited smartphone data roaming packs

Travelling overseas with your smartphone can be an expensive exercise but Optus has introduced Bridge Data Roaming Unlimited to prevent bill shock.

The packs allow unlimited data roaming in selected Asian cities with the choice of a three day pack or a five day pack priced at $27 or $40 respectively.

Optus is one of the founding members of the Bridge Alliance – the largest mobile operator alliance in the Asia Pacific region – and can offer Bridge Data Roaming Unlimited packs in destinations which include Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

With a Bridge Data Roaming Unlimited pack, Optus customers can now use their smartphones while travelling to these cities to search for restaurant, navigate using GPS and update their social networks without fear of coming home to a large bill.

The Bridge Data Roaming Unlimited packs will only work with the participating operator which is a member of the Bridge Alliance.

The alliance is a current partnership of eleven leading mobile operators – Airtel (India), AIS (Thailand), CSL (Hong Kong), CTM (Macau), Globe Telecom (Philippines), Maxis (Malaysia), SingTel Mobile (Singapore), SingTel Optus (Australia), SK Telecom (South Korea), Taiwan Mobile (Taiwan) and Telkomsel (Indonesia).

Optus customers will need to manually select that particular operator when they are arrive in their destination country to take advantage of the three or five-day pack.

And once the pack has expired, customers will be charged at the standard data roaming rate of $0.15/KB or $15.36/MB on Bridge Alliance networks.

“We know Australians depend heavily on the internet to organise their travel and stay in touch whilst overseas,” says Gavin Williams, Optus consumer marketing director.

“Bridge Data Roaming Unlimited packs offer our customers peace-of-mind when going online overseas. We will continue to look for ways to offer best value roaming deals for our customers in other popular destinations around the world.”

The Optus Bridge Data Roaming Unlimited packs can be used in selected Asian countries now and will extend to Macua and India in the near future.

It us unknown whether Optus will offer similar packs for travel to other destinations like Europe and the US.
