New touchscreen technology will make iPhone 5 even thinner
Apple’s new iPhone will incorporate new touchscreen technology which will make the device significantly thinner, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
WSJ cited sources “familiar with the matter” who explained the new display will integrate touchscreen into the LCD instead of requiring an extra layer.
The absence of this layer will save valuable millimetres in thickness as well as enhancing the quality of images on the screen.
These new screens for the iPhone 5 are reportedly in full production through Sharp and LG.
The iPhone 4S is 9.3mm thick but other more recent devices like the Samsung Galaxy S III are only 8.6mm thick.
Apple’s new screen technology will contribute to making the device possibly even thinner than the popular Galaxy S III.
Speculation about the new iPhone has been rife with reports indicating the device will also have a larger screen possibly up to 4.2-inch.
