Microsoft has thrown down the gauntlet to Australian developers to come up with apps for the Windows Phone 7 platform.

With Apple, Android and BlackBerry leading the way with hundreds of thousands apps already available for their users, Microsoft has launched a competition to encourage developers to get to work.

Microsoft is offering a trip to Las Vegas for the winning developer to attend MIX11 – the three-day event for elite web designers and development. Runners up will win one of five HTC Mozart 7 mobiles.

Windows Phone 7 launched late last year and offers a sleek and fast operating mobile operating system which has a customisable home screen to connect users with the features that are important to them.

These include email, Facebook and Windows Live feeds, Internet Explorer Mobile and connecting to your Xbox Live account through the Games Hub.

There are already touchscreen devices from LG, Samsung and HTC which are running Windows Phone 7.
