Apple has confirmed it will release a software update to address battery issues for iPhone 4S customers and those who upgraded their current device to iOS 5.

An Apple spokesperson said: “A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices.

“We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.”

The iOS 5 update was released on October 12 – a couple of days before the iPhone 4S, which ships with iOS 5, went on sale in Australia, the US and the UK.

One of iOS 5’s new features is Notifications which allows users to receive real time updates from their favourite apps – an action which will impact on battery performance.

But Apple’s statement indicated the issues affecting battery life will be addressed by a software update.

Developers have already been notified of the 5.0.1 beta update which “fixes bugs affecting battery life”.

Interestingly the same software update will improve voice recognition for Australian users using dictation.
