The Pope is now on Twitter. Pope Benedict XVI tweeted for the first time on an iPad 2.

His Holiness’s first 140 character entry to the twittersphere was to announce the new Vatican news and information website.

Already a presence on Facebook and YouTube, the Vatican is looking to spread the word to a more tech-savvy, connected audience.

The 84-year old pontiff used the iPad 2 to formally publish the new website for the first time before sending his first ever tweet.

Pope Benedict XVI’s first tweet read: Dear Friends, I just launched NEWS.VA Praised be to our Lord Jesus Christ ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI.

The site – The Vatican Today – offers news and events along with pontifical acts and world news. There is even a link to listen to live Vatican Radio.

The launch of the site and the pontiff’s first tweet also coincides with His Holiness’s 60th anniversary of his ordination as a priest.
