Apple announced the 15 billionth app has been downloaded from the App Store.

Since the App Store came online in 2008, developers have created more than 425,000 apps with more than 100,000 just for the iPad.

“In just three years, the revolutionary App Store has grown to become the most exciting and successful software marketplace the world has ever seen,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

“Thank you to all of our amazing developers who have filled it with over 425,000 of the coolest apps and to our over 200 million iOS users for surpassing 15 billion downloads.”

Apps have been downloaded in 90 countries and more than 200 million iPhones, iPods and iPads around the world from 20 different categories including games, business, news, productivity, navigation, social networking, travel, health, reference, utilities and sport.

The first billion took nine months with five billion being announced in June last year.

In January Apple’s app downloads cross the 10 billion mark and marched on to 15 billion less than six months later.
