Ford demonstrates vehicle-to-vehicle communication at Computex
Ford has demonstrated its experimental vehicle-to-vehicle communication (V2V) technology at the Computex trade-show in Taipei.
Two specially equipped Ford Kugas in Taipei’s downtown Zhongshan district were able to transmit data wirelessly to one another including vehicle speed, location and predicted path.
This information could be used to anticipate and possibly warn drivers of potential collision risks.
Ford hopes V2V can help decrease accidents, ease traffic congestion and help set up more efficient driving patterns.
“Ford is playing a leading role in developing this type of vehicle communications technology, entering into major research partnerships with governments, universities and industry groups in the U.S. and Europe,” said Trevor Worthington, vice president, Product Development, Ford Asia Pacific.
“We’re thrilled that we have this opportunity to showcase our progress for the first time in Asia Pacific.”
Ford’s V2V utilises a wi-fi-based radio system to communicate with nearby vehicles to share real-time information to make vehicles more aware of what’s happening around them.
V2V could be used to warn drivers about vehicles approaching at high speeds to make a more informed decision behind the wheel.
The technology can also be used to receive alerts of vehicles that are obscured, around a corner or approaching an intersection.
V2V is just one part of Ford’s Blueprint for Mobility that aims to reshape the transportation landscape.
Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) will also play a role in future driving so cars can interact with infrastructure to receive notifications for traffic jams, accidents and other events that can affect a driver’s route.
