Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 shatters sales records

Call of Duty has done it again – Modern Warfare 3 has become the biggest entertainment release of all time with $775m in sales in the first five days.

This eclipses the record set by Call of Duty: Black Ops last year which reached $650m and Modern Warfare 2’s $550 two years ago.

Call of Duty is the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records across all forms of entertainment for three years.  

Here in Australia Modern Warfare 3 is also proving a hit with local players.

“The popularity of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 with our customers has seen it break all our sales records in its first week,:” said GAME managing director, Paul Yardley.

Apart from breaking all previous first and five-day theatrical box office, book and video game record, Modern Warfare 3 has also created online records with Xbox Live.

By the end of the first day there were already more than 7 million multiplayer hours logged on Xbox Live – a 19 per cent increase over last years 5.9 million multiplayer hours logged with Call of Duty: Black Ops.

According to Microsoft, more than 3.3 million unique gamers played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on Xbox Live in one day on November 8 after launch. This is up from 2.6 million unique gamers for Call of Duty: Black Ops last year.
