In what could see the biggest change to our TV viewing habits for decades, Time Warner Cable in the US has launched an app which allows subscribers to view live TV on their iPad.

Programs are streamed to the iPad via the home’s wi-fi connection so users can watch anywhere in the house.

Users can scroll through the programs using an on-screen guide and even watch their favourite shows in high definition.

While a 10-inch iPad screen can’t compare to a larger TV screen and a surround sound experience, the new Time Warner Cable service is changing the TV-watching dynamic.

Australians are avid TV watchers and have demonstrated a willingness to watch programs on other devices including smartphones and the iPad so a live TV streaming service would be well received.

Foxtel has already embraced broadband distribution of its channels through the Xbox 360 and the Telstra T-Box.

Other catch-up services like ABC’s iView are already available in Australia for iPad users.

Time Warner Cable users also have to have an internet account with the company to use the app.

The service can only be used in the wi-fi area and won’t work over 3G.

The app works only on the iPad running iOS4.2 or higher.
