Why You Need a Mouse Pad or Desk Mat for a Wooden Desk

So you’ve just splashed out on a brand new wooden desk for the office, Awesome! Now you need to protect your investment.

Using your mouse directly on a wooden desk will be catastrophic over time. Constant mouse movement on your desk will destroy your mouse glides. You need these glides on your mouse to be in perfect condition as they make direct contact with your mousepad to create as little friction as possible. This allows a smooth and consistent cursor at all times. If these glides get damaged, you will have to purchase a new mouse which creates an unnecessary expense.

If you do not use a mouse mat on a wooden desk, your mouse will slowly scratch away at the protective varnish layer. This will create an uneven surface that your mouse cursor will not function correctly. Not only will this make your mouse difficult to use, it will destroy the resale value and aesthetic qualities of your brand new wooden desk!

What is the Best Mouse Pad to Buy for a Wooden Desk?

Now that you understand why it is necessary to have a mouse pad on a wooden desk, you will need to find the right mouse pad to purchase.

First you should ask yourself, do I want a mouse pad or a desk pad? A mouse pad is a great option if you just want to protect your desk from your mouse only. A desk pad is the best option if you want to protect your wood varnish coat from your keyboard and other small objects that make their way onto your desk, for example your phone, pens or even food and drinks. This may sound like overkill to some people however it is not uncommon for your keyboard to get bumped or to drop a pen or a mobile phone on your desk throughout the day. Over time this can lead to serious damage and it can all be prevented with a large desk pad.

There are plenty of great options for every budget, however a one fits all approach would be to create your own mouse pad. On websites like www.custommousepad.com.au you can create your own perfect mousepad. Firstly you choose your required size, as mentioned above you could go with a regular mouse pad of 25x35cm, or you could decide to cover your whole desk with a 100x50cm desk mat for maximum protection. The best part about a custom mouse pad is you can design an image to be printed onto it. This is a must have for businesses as it allows you to put branding on your desk. Having your business logo on your mouse pad creates a much more professional environment that customers and staff will certainly notice.

You can also find cheap alternatives on sites like Ebay or Temu which is the latest emerging trend out of China, however buying mouse pads from sites like this tend to be very poor quality. Not only will they be much thinner but your mouse may not be as responsive when paired with poor quality materials. If you are looking for a more budget friendly option we recommend looking in local department stores such as Officeworks or even Bunnings (yes even Bunnings has mouse pads!).

The Benefits of Using a Mouse Pad on a Wooden Desk

  • Protects the varnish layer of your desk from scratches and damage.
  • Protects your mouse from excessive wear, saving you money.
  • Provides a consistent, responsive surface for precise mouse control.
  • You can have a customised business logo on your mouse pad or desk mat creating a professional office environment.
