The day has finally arrived – the release of the iPad 2.

There have been people lining up outside Apple stores around Australia since yesterday to be among the first to get their hands on the device. Read Tech Guide’s review here.

But this year there is another choice – black or white. The other decision is whether to get a wi-fi only or wi-fi + 3G model. Data plans have just been announced.

If you are weighing up a 3G model there are a number of microSIM plans by Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.

Telstra’s plans start at $20 for 1GB with an expiry of 30 days and go all the way up to $100 for 12GB with the same 30 day expiry.

For those who want to use their data with Telstra over a longer period they can go for the $150 plan which provides 12GB of data and 365 days in which to use it. Full plans can be seen here.

Over at Optus there are $20 and $30 plans that offer 2GB and 3GB for 30 days respectively. Plans can be viewed here.

Vodafone has an introductory offer of $14.95 for 1.5GB which will also last for 30 days. Check the details out here.

One thing to consider if you are an iPhone 4 user is the new Personal Hotspot feature which came as part of the iOS 4.3 update last week.

The iPad 2 launches across Australia today.

This can turn the iPhone 4 in to a wi-fi hotspot and connect wirelessly to other devices and piggy back them onto the internet using the iPhone’s cellular connection.

For some users this could mean they can opt for the cheaper iPad 2 wi-fi only version.

Now before being to choose which iPad 2 you are going to opt for, the first hurdle is getting your hands on one and, by all indications, the best option is at an Apple store.

Stock will be delivered daily to stores and then distributed to other resellers. And you’ll notice none of these stores are advertising the fact they will have iPad 2 to sell.

Come 5pm today that may change – otherwise it will be Saturday morning.

The iPad 2 went on sale at 5pm at Apple stores.

Casual enquiries by Tech Guide at a couple of reseller stores about whether they would also be selling iPad 2 at 5pm was not able to be answered.

UPDATE: JB Hi-Fi stores at George St and Bondi Junction will be staying open until 8pm to sell the iPad 2. There is already a decent line at the JB Hi-Fi store in the Strand Arcade opposite the George St Apple Store.

We suspect stores will be selling them at 9am Saturday so that would be your next best option of you didn’t have the patience to queue outside an Apple store or your local JB Hi-Fi.
