Tablet sales in first half of 2013 nearly more than whole of 2012

ipad4gplanTablet sales are surging in Australia with 2.3 million units already sold in the first half of 2013, almost as much as the number of devices sold in all of 2012.

According to a new study released by technology analyst Telsyte, there are now more than seven million tablet users in Australia with research showing the fastest growth in the younger and older age groups.

Of the tablet devices sold in the first six months of 2013, 52 per cent are Apple iPads, 43 per cent are running Android and the rest – about 5 per cent – are Microsoft Windows-based tablets.

Of the Android segment of tablet products, Samsung is the clear leader with a healthy 40 per cent market share.

Telstye estimates the 5 per cent share of Windows tablets could grow to around 20 per cent by 2017.

Of all the media tablets sold in Australia, 20 per cent are connected to high-speed 4G/LTE networks.

“The market has become increasingly competitive, however, the iPad mini helped Apple retain market leadership in the first half of 2013,” Telsyte managing director Foad Fadaghi says.
