Sales of tablets in Australia doubled in 2013

ipadair1We love our tablets in Australia with sales doubling in 2013 to reach 4.8 million units, according to research released by technology analyst firm Telsyte.

The rapid increase in tablets sales last year has helped the popular device achieve a 40 per cent market penetration.

More than 9.4 million Australians were using tablets by the end of 2013 but Telstye estimates that figure to jump to 22 million by 2018 and exceed computer/PC penetration by the middle of next year.

According to Telsyte’s survey, tablets will become the primary computing device in the coming years.

“Australians are increasingly seeing their tablets as their main computing device in the home” says Telsyte Managing Director Foad Fadaghi.

“This shift in preferences is creating new digital opportunities that span consumer services, education and entertainment.”

Apple enjoyed a healthy year of sales with the iPad which grew by 52 per cent in 2013 to 2.6 million units.

Android tablet sales grew by 189 per cent last year with more than 1.9 million devices purchased during the same period.

Interestingly a quarter of tablets being used in Australia were purchased as gifts.

Cheaper Android tablets are also flooding into the country and their growth has impacted Apple’s market share with the iPad.

Apple market share in Australia has dropped from 72 per cent in 2012 to 55 per cent in 2013.
