Modern technology gives us many things.

It’s World Backup Day and no better time to stress the importance of backing up

Today is World Backup Day and there has never been a better time emphasise the importance of having a backup of our data from our smartphones, tablets and computers.

I’ve lost count of the times when readers and listeners have contacted me asking if it was possible to get their data back after their device was lost or stolen or just stopped working.

If they had a backup of their data – this wouldn’t be an issue.

According to World Back Up Day – a consortium of companies including Amazon and Dell Technologies, 21 per cent of people – that’s more than one in five – have never made a backup.

Now that’s tempting fate right there when you consider the sheer amount of data and digital content we create every single day.

According to the Domo, 1.7MB of data was created by every human every second back in 2020. That figure is no doubt even higher in 2022.

Not having a backup can be catastrophic.

World Back Up Day says there are 113 smartphones stolen every minute around the world.

Also consider that 30 per cent of all computers are already infected with malware.

Losing your data can happen even if you don’t lose your device either through a device malfunction, an accident or human error.

In fact, 29 per cent of data losses are accidental. That’s almost a third.

So you can see why having a backup of your data is important.

The bulk of our backups would be photos and videos. These precious memories are irreplaceable and yet another motivation to get that backup sorted.

There are number of ways to backup including to the cloud (ideal for smartphones and tablets) or with an external hard drive (perfect for desktop and laptop computers).

Having your storage in the cloud means your data is accessible from anywhere and on any device.

The choices include Apple’s iCloud, OneDrive and Google Drive among many others.

An external hard drive provides a local backup of your computer or laptop which doesn’t require an internet connection.

you simply need to connect the external hard drive with the cable to your laptop or desktop computer and organise regular backups.

setting up automatic backups of your mobile devices is ideal and can be achieved with devices like the SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive Luxe, the SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go and the SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe.

They are available in capacities up to 1TB and can plug directly into your mobile devices, including iPhones and Android smartphones, to quickly move files to the memory for backup or to clear space on the device itself.

The WD HDD solutions like the My Passport or My Passport Ultra – available in capacities up to 5TB – can be used to backup laptops and desktops with ease.

Customers can make the backup even more secure by choosing a device that is encrypted with a password to make sure your files stay safe and private

Accidents happen and dropping a laptop or phone can happen to the best of us.

But having a backup makes that accident a lot less costly.
