iPad 3 is likely to go on sale in late March

Rumours about the upcoming iPad 3 are kicking into high gear with an announcement expected in early March ahead of a late March release.

The iPad 3, according to the many whispers circulating, is likely to have a high resolution Retina Display that will give it a resolution higher than a 1920 x 1080 full high definition TV at 2048 x 1536.

It will probably have a faster A6 dual core or quad core processor (the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S have the dual core A5) and possibly an improved camera.

Another rumoured addition is said to be Siri – the voice-activated digital assistant introduced with the iPhone 4S.

As with the iPhone 4S, users will be able to talk to the iPad 3 to schedule events, check the weather and ask questions.

In terms of design there has been little said about major changes. The iPad 2 is already thinner than the iPhone 4S and the iPad 3 could well look exactly the same.

And the new product might not even be called the iPad 3.

With the addition of the Retina Display that takes the resolution above high definition it may even be called the iPad HD.

Other questions being asked are whether the iPad 3 will be 4G compatible to make it even faster on the mobile networks. Telstra’s 4G network is already up and running with Optus and Vodafone to follow in the coming months.

The iPad 2 will probably still be offered as an entry-level product with the iPad 3 being offered as the top of the line device.

According to TheNextWeb, Apple has entered “crunch mode” with apps being prepared for the on-stage demonstrations and TV commercials.

If Apple follows its usual 12-month product cycle, the iPad 3 will go on sale in Australia in late March.
