iPad 2 listings surge on eBay to ditch old for new

There has been an explosive increase of iPad 2 listings on eBay in Australia since the new third generation iPad hit the market on March 16.

According to the online auction site, iPad 2 listings totalled 16,860 which is thirteen times higher than since March 15 – the day before Apple’s latest tablet went on sale.

Listings of iPad 2 cases have also surged from 654 before the new iPad launch to 14,340 the following week – which is more than 20 times higher.

“Sales of the latest technology thrive on eBay.com.au with an electronics item sold every four seconds,” says eBay spokesperson Jenny Thomas.

“However, with the release of an updated version of a product, we typically see an incredible surge in listings of the previous model as consumers try and make money to find their next purchase.”

The new iPad sold more than three million units worldwide in its opening weekend – the highest ever sales figure for the iPad.

The original iPad took 28 days to cross the one million mark when it first went on sale in the US in April 2010.
