Apple today confirmed the next generation iPad will be unveiled at a special media event in San Francisco on March 2.

And Tech Guide will be there at the event to give readers the first look at the highly-anticipated refresh of Apple’s popular touchscreen device.

The launch will take place at the Buena Yerba Centre for the Arts at 10am US time which will be 3am March 3 in Australia if you’re keen to hear the announcements as they happen.

Invitations were sent to the media, including myself, today.

The iPad 2 is expected to be thinner and lighter and feature a front-facing camera for FaceTime video calls.

With Apple CEO Steve Jobs currently on medical leave it is unclear whether he will appear at the event.

Jobs took the covers off the original iPad at the same venue in San Francisco in January 2010 before it went on sale in the US in April 2010.

The official iPad 2 invitation from Apple

If Apple follows its traditional product cycle we can expect to see the iPad 2 in April or possibly even sooner.

At last year’s event the presentation by Steve Jobs was followed by hands-on time with the product and we’re expecting the same next week.

Rumours about the iPad 2 have been circulating for weeks with the main new features said to be a new thinner design, improved audio and a front, and possibly a rear, camera.

Screen resolution will reportedly remain the same but a dual core processor is also said to be on board to make the device a lot faster.

Apple faces some strong challenges in 2011 from tablet rivals with a number of Android-powered devices from companies including Motorola, HTC, Samsung scheduled for the second quarter of the year.

Research In Motion, creator of the BlackBerry devices, will also release its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet which will feature a dual core processor and a 7-inch touchscreen.

The new iPad may be revealed on March 2
