Apple has cracked the 10 billion mark with app downloads since the store opened in 2008.

The 10 billionth app was downloaded by Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent in the UK and, in the process, won a $10,000 iTunes gift card.

The app she downloaded was Paper Glider.

It’s an extraordinary milestone which was achieved in a relatively short time – two and half years. The achievement was trumpeted on the official Apple website (below).

It took the iTunes store seven years to hit 10 billion since its 2003 launch.

The App Store today offers more than 350,000 apps, with more than 60,000 of these designed especially for the iPad, with a range of apps in 20 categories including games, social networking, business, productivity, health and travel.

“With more than 10 billion apps downloaded in just two and a half years—a staggering seven billion apps in the last year alone—the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

“The App Store has revolutionized how software is created, distributed, discovered and sold. While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet.”
