Optus today announced it had signed a binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA) and Vodafone Network.
This means Optus will be able to access additional mobile sites created by Vodafone to strengthen its existing 3G and upcoming 4G services across Australia.
The agreement will see a 20 per cent increase in the number of mobile sites used by the Optus mobile network by 2015 for better and broader coverage and increased data speeds for its customers.
Optus’s arrangement with Vodafone will expand 3G and 4G coverage to additional sites in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Geelong, Central Coast, Gold Coast and Canberra.
And from April 13 for a period of 5 years Optus will be the exclusive roaming partner for Vodafone customers in selected regional areas.
Another community benefit of the Optus/Vodafone agreement will mean the two companies can locate the majority of their new network infrastructure on existing sites and minimise the need for additional sites.

“We will bring quicker data speeds, better call quality, and improved performance in more places to ensure Optus customers stay closer to family and friends through the latest mobile services,” Mr Russell said.
