Club Penguin teams up with AFP to promote online safety for kids

The Australian Federal Police has teamed up with Disney to create a new online safety program for primary schools.

Disney’s popular Club Penguin, a virtual world for kids, and experts from the experts at the Australian Federal Police will create the free program called Online Safety, It All Starts With You.

It has already reached more than 1,200 primary schools around the country and involved more than 30,000 students.

The program is designed to teach students three simple rules.

Be Cool – respects others as you would in the real world

Be Heard – if you come across anything troublesome online, report it to a trusted adult.

Be Safe – learn how to protect your passwords, personal information and privacy settings online.

The program teaches safety and how to become ethical online citizens as well as understanding safe protocols and social issues.

“The AFP’s transnational work has a strong focus on protecting children in online environments, and this initiative with Disney is a significant indication of how widely-recognised and respected our law enforcement expertise is in the online industry,” says Minister for Justice Michael Keenan.

“If students are aware about the potential dangers of the online world, they will be more in tune to potential risks as they grow up in an online world.

“It’s important we engage with students about real life lessons that will ultimately prepare and protect them in the future.”

Disney’s chief marketing officer Kylie Watson-Wheeler says it was important to engage students not only on computers but also on mobile devices.

“Disney’s natural affinity with kids puts us in a unique position to connect with families and children on important messages such as staying savvy and safe online,” she said.

“Kids today have incredible access to the online environment and it’s important they also have access to learning materials that help them make smart decisions about online safety.

“Club Penguin is proud to partner with the AFP to ensure online safety remains top of mind for students around Australia as they realise online safety, starts with them.”
