Apple turns the MacBook Pro into a real powerhouse with its new family of M4 chips

Apple has launched a new MacBook Pro powered by its latest M4 family of chips M4, M4 pro and M4 Max which offer next level performance and built for Apple Intelligence.

The new MacBook Pro is available in 14-inch and 16-inch models in space black and silver and start at $2,499 and $3,999 respectively. They will go on sale on November 8.
“MacBook Pro is an incredibly powerful tool that millions of people use to do their life’s best work, and today we’re making it even better,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.

“With the powerful M4 family of chips, and packed with pro features like Thunderbolt 5, an advanced 12MP Centre Stage camera, an all-new nano-texture display option, and Apple Intelligence, the new MacBook Pro continues to be, by far, the world’s best pro laptop.”

Under the hood of the new MacBook Pros are the new M4 chips which offer CPU performance that can handle the most demanding tasks and workloads.

This combined with Machine Learning accelerators in the CPU along with an advanced GPU and a more efficient and faster Neural Engine which is tailor-made to handle on device AI.

The new chips not only offer power but also efficiency with industry-leading performance per watt which means users can enjoy up to 24 hours of battery life.

14-INCH MACBOOK PRO WITH M4

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 would be suitable for entrepreneurs, students and creators.

It has a 10-core CPU with four performance cores and six efficiency cores and a faster 10-core GPU.

It comes with 16GB of unified memory with support for up to 32GB plus 120GB/s of memory bandwidth.

This makes the new MacBook Pro up to 1.8x faster than the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1.

The M4 model can support two high resolution external monitors and includes three Thunderbolt 4 ports.

MacBook Pro with M4 delivers:

– Up to 7x faster image processing in Affinity Photo when compared to the 13‑inch MacBook Pro with Core i7, and up to 1.8x faster when compared to the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1.

– Up to 10.9x faster 3D rendering in Blender when compared to the 13‑inch MacBook Pro with Core i7, and up to 3.4x faster when compared to the 13‑inch MacBook Pro with M1.

– Up to 9.8x faster scene edit detection in Adobe Premiere Pro when compared to the 13‑inch MacBook Pro with Core i7, and up to 1.7x faster when compared to the 13‑inch MacBook Pro with M1.

MACBOOK PRO WITH M4 PRO

The MacBook Pro with M4 Pro is ideal for users who require higher performance like researchers, developers, engineers and creative professionals.

It has a 14-core CPU with 10 performance cores and four efficiency cores along with a 20-core GPU that’s twice as powerful as M4.

The MacBook Pro with M4 Pro has a 75 per cent improvement in memory bandwidth over the previous generation which is double that of any AI PC chip.

MacBook Pro with M4 Pro offers:

– Up to 4x faster scene rendering performance with Maxon Redshift when compared to the 16-inch MacBook Pro with Core i9, and up to 3x faster when compared to the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro.

– Up to 5x faster simulation of dynamical systems in MathWorks MATLAB when compared to the 16-inch MacBook Pro with Core i9, and up to 2.2x faster when compared to the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro.

– Up to 23.8x faster basecalling for DNA sequencing in Oxford Nanopore MinKNOW when compared to the 16-inch MacBook Pro with Core i9, and up to 1.8x faster when compared to the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro.

MACBOOK PRO WITH M4 MAX

The MacBook Pro with M4 Max offers the ultimate performance for customers like data scientists, 3D artists and composers who are constantly pushing the envelope with their tasks and workflow.

The MacBook Pro with M4 Max can easily offer the power for projects that were previously only possible on a desktop.

M4 Max has a 16-core CPU up to 40-core GPU and a Neural Engine that is 3x faster than the M1 Max which allows on device AI models to run faster than ever before.

The MacBook Pro with M4 Max can easily handle creative workloads like visual effects, 3D animation and film scoring.

It supports up to 128 GB of unified memory.

MacBook Pro with M4 Max provides:

– Up to 7.8x faster scene rendering performance with Maxon Redshift when compared to the 16-inch MacBook Pro with Intel Core i9, and up to 3.5x faster when compared to the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max.

– Up to 4.6x faster build performance when compiling code in Xcode when compared to the 16‑inch MacBook Pro with Intel Core i9, and up to 2.2x faster when compared to the 16‑inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max.

– Up to 30.8x faster video processing performance in Topaz Video AI when compared to the 16‑inch MacBook Pro with Intel Core i9, and up to 1.6x faster when compared to the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max.

For the first time Apple is offering a new nano-texture display with the MacBook Pro which helps to greatly reduce glare and reflections in bright areas.

Also onboard is the new 12MP Centre Stage camera which could enhance the quality of your video calls even in challenging lighting conditions and keep you centred in the frame even if you move around.

The new camera also offers Desk View which allows you to share your desktop on a video call.

The MacBook Pro with M4 Pro and M4 Max also come with Thunderbolt 5 ports which double transfer speeds when compared to Thunderbolt 4 to up to 120GB/s.

This makes it possible for even faster external storage access and even more powerful docking and hub solutions.

All MacBook Pro models include a HDMI port that supports up to 8K resolution, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe 3 charging port and a headphone Jack.

There is also support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

And of course, it’s ready for Apple Intelligence which will be released to Australian customers in December.
