Apple’s iOS app economy surges in Australia despite COVID impact

Despite the world being in lockdown during the COVID pandemic and job and businesses disappearing, the Australian app economy has still powered ahead.

In Australia, the Apple iOS app economy created more than 156,000 jobs as of January 2021 – a 15 per cent increase from 2019 and well above the app economy 113,000 jobs in 2017.

The Android app ecosystem has 123,000 jobs as of January 2021 but the numbers add up to more than the total number of app economy jobs because many jobs specify more than one operating system.

The App Store and the iOS app ecosystem became one of the fastest growing sectors of the world economy since its launch in 2008.

It became a central place where developers could distribute and market their apps to a global audience and, in the process, created a booming economy that employs millions of people worldwide.

The App Store is now home to 1.8 million apps and visited by half a billion people a week.

To date, developers have earned more than $US200 billion to date through the sale of digital goods and services in 175 markets around the world.

Australian app developers have also experienced huge success around the world including James Cuda, the Tasmanian developer behind drawing app Procreate and Zac Duff the CEO and co-founder of AR app JigSpace.

Developed in Melbourne, Australia, JigSpace uses Apple’s augmented reality software to make learning in 3D simple, fast, and enjoyable on Apple devices.

Melbourne’s JigSpace takes advantage of Apple’s ARKit software to create an app that takes traditional learning from 2D to 3D.
