Internet security company Trend Micro has released the latest version of its Mobile Security solution to protect both Android smartphones and tablets.
The software can scan apps before they are installed, locate, wipe and lock a lost device and block mobile online threats.
The app scanning component of Mobile Security – Personal Edition is free while the other features are available on a subscription basis.
Trend Micro’s complete Mobile Security – Personal Edition is priced at $29.95 for a year’s protection on your Android smartphone and tablet and $49.95 for two years.
Google says there are more than 100 million active Android users worldwide and this is expanding at the rate of 400,000 additional devices per day.
This explosive growth hasn’t escaped the attention of hackers and cybercriminals who view the mobile platform as the next frontier to exploit,
Trend Micro’s researchers have observed a 1400 per cent increase in Android-based malware (malicious software) in the last six months.
With smartphones now being used like a computer in terms of connectivity and the ability to download and install apps they are under the same threats as a desktop or laptop computer.
Mobile Security – Personal Edition can be like a bodyguard for your smartphone.
As an app scanner, Mobile Security can examine apps before they are installed and check to see of they are after your personal information.
If a customer loses their device there are a number of options available to them.
Firstly the device can be located on a map. Trend Micro’s app also allows users to trigger an alarm or remotely lock the device.
If the owner is concerned about any personal information on the device falling into the wrong hands can also choose to completely wipe the smartphone.
As an added safeguard, the device is automatically locked when the SIM card is removed from the device.
There is also protection for when users receive calls and texts and when they browse the web on their device.
Mobile Security can detect and block threats like online banking scams and unwanted calls and texts.
“We believe mobile users need to be protected against malicious applications, so to help protect as many people as possible and stifle criminal attempts to steal personal and financial information we are offering our anti-malware scanner for free.” said Tina Su, Trend Micro’s senior product marketing manager.
“With over 200,000 devices currently protected with prior or Beta versions of the solution, we are confident in our ability to provide a solution that enables people to live out their digital lives safely and securely.”
The app can be downloaded now from the Android Market.
