Telstra expecting record live streaming on its updated NRL and AFL apps in 2017

Telstra is predicting a record-breaking year for live streaming of NRL and AFL matches to mobile devices in 2017 after completing major app updates so footy fans will never miss a moment this season.

Netball has also joined the Telstra fold so fans can access live games on the mobile app and on Telstra TV.

Telstra mobile customers have free access to these Live Passes which allow them to stream live matches fast and data free on the apps which are available on the iPhone and Android platforms.

In September 2016 alone, more than 3.8 million fans watched NRL and AFL games on their mobile devices.

Telstra has high expectations for the Live Passes apps in 2017.

The company is anticipating more than 3 million fans will combine to stream NRL and AFL matches each and every round.

Non-Telstra customers will still be able to access the NRL, AFL and Netball apps to watch live games but they will have to pay a monthly fee of $12.99 (NRL), $14.99 (AFL) and $12.99 (Netball).

Customers can also buy a yearly pass for $29.99 (Netball) or $89.99 (NRL or AFL).

The Live Pass allows fans to watch matches through the apps on mobile phones and tablets. These viewers can’t AirPlay or Chromecast the match to their televisions as this would infringe on the TV rights holders Channel 9 and Foxtel.

Telstra is aware of the importance of smartphones for today’s users with users spending 90 per cent of the time they are using their device engaged in apps.

And 44 per cent of active users use a dedicated sports app.

Also in attendance at the Telstra Live Pass launch today was NRL CEO Todd Greenberg, AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan and Netball Australia CEO Marne Fechner.

The new features of the NRL Official Live App will be the integration of live bunker decisions for each match along with more intelligent viewing with player stats and news stories.

The AFL Live app will now include Women’s AFL content and personalization for fans can get targeted news updates about their favourite teams.

With the Netball Live app, fans can watch every game and every round and also receive customised content feeds from each team.

There is also a new Telstra TV app for Netball with two live matches each week broadcast in full high definition.

The new Telstra Live apps for NRL, AFL and Netball are available now.
